How Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to rejuvenate your skin, hair, and body!
Advancements and innovations in modern medicine happen rapidly. It is especially exciting when some of these new treatment therapies can treat multiple conditions and have benefits that cross over to several specialties of medicine. Used since 1987 to help heal sports injuries, platelet-rich plasma, or PRP treatments, are just that kind of advancement. These treatments literally unleash the healing and restorative properties of your own blood to rejuvenate your skin, hair, and body!
What exactly IS Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
“Platelet-rich plasma is a naturally occurring component of your blood that is full of beneficial growth factors,” says Dr. Lisa Erhard, an OB/GYN currently using PRP to restore skin and hair and improve female vaginal health in her practice. “When injected into a specific treatment area, like the scalp or the vaginal lining, these growth factors can encourage the growth of fresh, healthy tissue,” she continues. “PRP is true tissue regeneration at a cellular level!”
What happens during a PRP treatment?
The first step of a PRP treatment, regardless of where the product is to be injected, is to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. This includes a painless blood draw, after which, your blood will be spun down in a centrifuge to isolate the PRP.
Once separated, the plasma may be mixed with other ingredients to heighten its benefits, especially in the case of hair restoration. The PRP is then injected into the skin and/or spread topically over the treatment area after it has been microneedled, as is the case with the PRP Facial, sometimes referred to as the Vampire Facial®.
Where can PRP be used?
“Many of my patients have heard of PRP due to its use in sports medicine,” explains Dr. Lisa. “It has been used for years to help heal sports injuries like torn ACLs and rotator cuffs because it expedites your bodies capacity to heal and regenerate tissue in an injured area,” she explains. “This ability was quickly noted by the cosmetic medicine world, and the regenerative properties of PRP are now used to restore volume and vitality to aging skin, regrow thinning hair, and even enhance the health and circulation of a woman’s vaginal lining.”
PRP Hair Restoration
“My hair began to thin at my crown significantly during and after menopause,” says Sonja, a current patient of Dr. Lisa at her practice, Wayzata Cosmetic Surgery & Spa. “At one point, you could see the pink sheen to my scalp, and I felt so unattractive,” she continues. “6 weeks after my first PRP Hair Restoration treatment with Dr. Lisa, I began to notice fine, new hair begins to grow in, and I was just ecstatic,” says Sonja. “I’ve just wrapped up my final treatment and am so happy to report that I have about 80% improvement and my scalp is not visible!”
When it comes to hair restoration, PRP is very versatile. Used on its own, it can improve the health and size of shrinking hair follicles. In some cases, this can stop or slow the progression of hair loss in both men and women. PRP can also stimulate fresh, new, healthy regrowth.
“We have a very comprehensive PRP hair restoration program at our clinic that includes both injecting and microneedling PRP into the scalp,” shares Dr. Lisa. “We also offer options, such as oral supplements and laser scalp therapy to improve our patients’ results even further.”
Facial Rejuvenation with PRP
As we age, our skin’s production of collagen and elastin steadily declines. Collagen and elastin are components of our skin’s structure that give it lift, volume and youthful fullness and vibrancy. When injected under the skin, as in a PRP Facelift, or Vampire Facelift® treatment, PRP can stimulate your body’s collagen production and naturally rejuvenate your appearance. These results will happen over time, so many patients who want same-day results decide to add dermal fillers to their PRP Facelift. Fillers like Voluma® and Juvederm® can instantly smooth out a wrinkle and provide lift and support while the results of PRP steadily progress.
“Many of our patients opt to combine their PRP Facelift treatment with a PRP Microneedling Facial,” says Dr. Lisa. “In these cases, I would complete the injectable facelift component of the treatment, and then one of my Licensed Aestheticians would follow with SkinPen® Microneedling to “irrigate” the skin’s surface before topically applying the remaining PRP,” she explains. “The results of combining these two treatments is truly remarkable. Weeks later the skin looks firmer, fuller and quite simply, more ALIVE!”
PRP for Vaginal Rejuvenation
Just as PRP can boost collagen and elastin production in our skin, it can help restore volumizing support and blood flow to a woman’s vaginal lining. Often referred to as the “O-Shot®,” this application of PRP has shown significant results in increasing moisture, blood flow, tightness and sensation to a woman’s vaginal area.
“I encourage my female patients who are being treated with ThermiVA for leaky bladder and/or MonaLisa Touch® to increase vaginal moisture to add on PRP to their treatment series,” advises Dr. Lisa. “Not only does the PRP speed up healing from these procedures, but I also find it truly enhances their outcomes and improves their sensation and overall enjoyment of intimacy with their partners!”
As you can see, the beauty of platelet-rich plasma lies in its versatility. It is an entirely natural approach to rejuvenation that has been proven to be safe and effective. Advancements and discoveries are still being made in the use of PRP in medicine, aesthetics and beyond!
